THE BIG IDEA
Who Permitted You?
I saw the weirdest thing today!
If I ever had to go for a job interview, let's say I’m nervous, trying to impress the hiring manager.
Then, out of the blue, they ask me if I’m gay, pregnant, over 40, or where my accent's from. Trust me to dial 911! Oh right, 911 doesn’t work in Nigeria. Then I’d ask them the popular question “Do you know who I am?!” Just to scare them because really, I don’t know anyone.
Seriously, who asks about that in a job interview? Well, it turns out that a good number of hiring managers ask these kinds of questions, even though they're not supposed to.
These are the issues: asking about someone's religion, race, gender, or pregnancy status during a job interview is a big no-no. Why? Because it's against the law to use those answers to decide if someone gets hired. Simple as that.
Certainly, not all questions are off-limits. Like, if you mention you have kids, it's cool for the hiring manager to talk about it. But there's a line between friendly chat and crossing into illegal territory.
Sometimes, there's a legitimate reason to know certain info, like if you can legally work in the country. But even then, there are better ways to ask. Like, instead of straight-up asking about someone's religion, you could focus on whether they can do the job.
Oh, and pregnant? That's off-limits. Unless you're their doctor or you see a baby popping out during the interview (which, let's hope not), don't go there.
Or what do you think? For me, I think I agree with Inc Africa to give training! Companies should teach their hiring managers what's cool to ask and what's not.
Because trust me, avoiding legal drama is worth the effort.
