What’s Shopify Cooking?
So, Shopify recently introduced a new pay policy that might cause trouble.
They will only give raises to employees who get the most points in a competitive ranking system. Meaning if you don't score high enough, nothing for you!
I smell a toxic work environment building, and thankfully I’m not the only one.
Even experts are worried it'll make people compete against each other instead of working together. And in the long run, it might make good employees leave and then it becomes harder for Shopify to hire new talent.
This is similar to what Jack Welch did when he ran GE. He'd rank employees and fire the bottom 10% every year. Crazy!
Even today, most companies still use rating systems to decide who gets raises.
Sometimes for employees, knowing exactly where they stand compared to their coworkers can be tough. Some people think it's better to keep these things secret to avoid hurting their morale.
But, maybe being open about how raises are decided is probably a good thing.
